I revisited a Viking shield project from (2019) and decided to improve, expand and showcase new skills for this project. This project was originally inspired from the Vikings (2013) series, so I built upon the original inspiration and expanded upon it. During the modelling process, I researched into Iconic shields that were used by characters in the Viking series such as, Ivar the Boneless, Lagertha Lothbrok and King Harald Finehair just to name a few and tried to replicate the design Aesthetic of these shields. The recreation of the Viking shield grew from just one prop, towards a variety of props from the Viking era. Using Unreal Engine 5, the props formed a small Diorama scene that represents a small arsenal of weapons and resources used for Warfare, raiding, plundering, drinking and structural design. The props consisted of Shields, Helmets, Swords, Pillars, Flags, Horns, Axes, Barrels, torches and candles. This project heavily utilised Zbrush for the high to low poly workflow and explored the use of patterns and ornamental details that represent the Viking lineage, tribal identity, or to mark the weapon's origin and quality through techniques like pattern welding. Overall I was pleased with the final outcome and as a big fan of the Viking series, It was an absolute blast to create a project based around the shows iconic work. Thanks for viewing.
- Used deformation tools such as Nonlinear curves and Wave in Maya, to manipulate the shape of a model.
- Explored Patterns and Ornamental details using Alphas and 2D shapes in Zbrush
- Setup a small scene in Unreal Engine 5 to feature props made for the project.
- Used Material functions, Shaders and Niagara to create motion, background effects that consisted of, mist, candle lights, dust motes and flickering effects.
- Lighting, Rendering, final edits and composition were done using, Unreal Engine, Photoshop and Premier Pro.
UE5 - Video. Moving Mist, Candle light, Subtle light flicker and dust motes were created using Niagara, Material functions and Shaders.
Used Non-Linear deformation in Maya, to make the curved shape of the shields
